It is recommended to replace Oxygen Sensors every 100,000 miles as well as during installation of a new catalytic converter.
Oxygen sensor may fail due to a normal agin process. The sensors may also fail prematurely if they become contaminated with oil combustion products or traces of decomposing engine gaskets or engine sealants or leaking coolant.
A defective sensor prevents the car computer from adjusting air-fuel mixture properly, typically resulting in the air-fuel mixture becoming rich. The final effect is high fuel consumption and incresed emissions.
A malfunctioning oxygen sensor may cause damage to the catalytic converter. A rich fuel mixture makes the converter to run much hotter than normal. When the converter overheats the catalyst substrate inside may melt or disintegrate forming a partial or complete blockage. The result can be a drastic drop in engine performance or engine stalling due to a buildup of backpressure in the exhaust system.
